Halloween Writing Contest

I wrote this story for @Scaleitsimple’s Halloween Writing Contest I probably won’t get enough votes but it looked like a lot of fun so I decided to do it. You can Email Scaleitsimpleblog@gmail.com if you want to vote.

It was one of those nights on cemetery lane that made you feel electric with energy and somber with thought all at the same time. The air was crisp, dead leaves scattered as they ran underfoot and glided overhead, filling the night with noise. The moon was full and luminous casting an eerie light on the scene below. Halloween was in full swing, the streets were abuzz with hooded figures and lively children enjoying their annual candy hunt.

Hidden from the action at the end of the long lane of perfectly decorated houses stood the towering and dark-windowed number 13 cemetery lane. Behind it, the forest stood lightless and desolate, a depressing shadow on a lively scene. It was at this very house at this very moment that…

two girls, Kat Michael and Jessica Lawler stood in the yard of 13 cemetery lane in shock .

Jessica had just moved to Plainville, Minnesota 2 months ago and so far she had only made one friend. Jessica knew Aaron Burr High was not a perfect school yet she was enjoying her first few months. Jess’s parents bought a house on Cemetery Lane and Jess never really knew why.  It was a regular street of small houses with few children and lot’s of elderlies. It was a boring street with no activity ever. But Jess liked the quietness of the cul-de-sac. Jess also liked that Cemetery Lane was sort of a mystery to her. Because it was not anywhere near a cemetery. The one thing that scared her the most about her street was 13 cemetery lane. It was by far the creepiest house Jessica had ever seen. It’s grey paint chipped and cracked like old memories. It’s front lawn was a sea of  dry yellow crab grass.  And the worst part of all was the blurred figures in the windows that Jess only saw once and a while. When Jess walked home every day leaves would crack under her feet, that was the only noise Cemetery Lane ever heard.

“It’s Halloween Kat come on, we should totally go out”

“No Jess, trick or treating is for kids, we’re 15. “

Jess watched Kat shove her heavy coat into her navy blue backpack. She always took it off before they got to school to impress Matt White. Matt  got off of his bus at the same time Kat did every single day. Kat and Jess both knew they had some type of affection towards Matt but they never mentioned it. Because pretty much all the girls in 10th grade had a total crush on him. Matt had milky blonde hair and soft hazel eyes that could make a girl swoon. He was super athletic too, captain of the football team. Jess blushed just thinking about him. Kat put her hair back in a high ponytail and smiled at Jess.

“Matt White is going out” Jess teased.

“Oh” Kat said, eyeing Jess suspiciously.

The bus stopped and everyone began to exit. Kat got up and slung her backpack over her left shoulder. Jess stood and followed Kat out the bus.

“Fine. We won’t go out. How about we have a sleep over at my house?” Jess said stepping off the bus.

“That’s a perfect idea I have nothing to do tonight.”

The two girls entered school bumping into other students to get to the 10th grade hallway. They waved to each and separated to their lockers. Jess unpacked and walked into homeroom. Mr Van was sitting at his desk drinking coffee and staring at his computer. Jess walked over to her seat to find Matt White sitting at her desk.

“Ummm… Mat…” Jess said feeling really confused.

“Yeah I sit here now so I can be closer to Bethany. Ok?”

Matt stared at Jess like she was a murderer. His hazel eyes almost made her nervous.

“Matt please move” Jess said, her voice shaking.

“Sorry” Matt brought his legs up over the desk and put his hands up over his head and laughed.

Jess gave up and walked over to the front of the class and sat at next to the pencil sharpener.  She placed her palm on her cheeks to cool her flushed face. Matt was really, really cute. The bell rang and everyone sat down. Bethany Berkens sat right next to Matt and began flirting instantly. Sooner or later the homeroom bell rang and everyone exited the classroom including Matt and Bethany, who were holding hands. Just another normal yet boring day at Aaron Burr High school.

The radio blasted out Jessica Lawler’s bedroom. Kat laughed hysterically as she sent Norman Blake another hilarious text.

“He thinks you like him Jess!” Kat screeched

Norman Blake was that one guy in 10th grade that picked his nose and ate it in front of girls. Kat shook the bed she was laughing so hard. Jess sat on the floor uncomfortably laughing with Kat. Jess knew outside her bedroom kids and their parents were trick or treating down her street. She stood up and peered out her bedroom window and gasped.  She stared at a large grey house with shattered windows and leafless trees.

“Kat…” Jess said through gulps.

Kat ignored Jess and continued snickering.

“Katherine!”

Jess turned around and Kat fell silent.

“You might want to take a look at this”

Kat quickly got up and looked out the window.

“Oh… my… god” they both said in unison.

The girls ran out of the bedroom, down the stairs and out the front door. They sprinted to Jess’s into 13 Cemetery Lane’s yard and stopped at the lifeless body of Bethany Berkens.

“What do we do?” asked Kat, her voice shivering.

“Not just that but… who did this?” murmured Jess.
